Ireland and the United States share a common law heritage and written constitutions, yet their paths have diverged in striking ways. In this lecture, Ireland's Attorney General explores the shared legal and political ancestry and some of the legal differences between the two countries - from foundational common law doctrines to Ireland's present status as an EU member state with a layered system of constitutional, European Convention, and EU Charter standing in contrast to the United States' single, entrenched Bill of Rights, offering a revealing lens on two legal traditions that started from the same place and arrived at somewhat different destinations.

Speaker: Rossa Fanning, Attorney General of Ireland

  • When:   12:30-1:30 pm  Tuesday, September 8, 2026
